A Team of Four in the Harnessing Hall

Part of the collection: Painting and drawing

Popularization note

Frantiszek Streybl, A Team of Four in the Harnessing Hall, signed “F. Streybl 1904” The Czech painter Frantiszek Streybl worked for Roman Potocki, third ordynat, for several dozen years from 1897 to 1912, primarily painting portraits of Ordynatowa Potocka’s saddle mares. The only painting with a different presentation is the view of the interior of the Harnessing Hall in the newly erected Castle Coach House with a team of four standing inside. This enormous Harnessing Hall with a floor made of wood and stone was intended for harnessing horses and for cleaning the carriages ˗ this is why there are taps and tanks set by the walls in the paved section. Streybl presented the yellow mylord carriage in the centre of the Harnessing Hall, pulled by a four-in-hand in a black Hungarian harness, which is driven by a postilion in a semi-formal attire. In the background, the western wall of the Harnessing Hall is visible with open doors to the Yellow Coach House ˗ with country vehicles parked there. Aldona Cholewianka-Kruszyńska
