Bottle from the Łańcut brewery with the inscription Steam Brewery

Part of the collection: History of the city and the region

Popularization note

One of the oldest preserved bottles of the Łańcut brewery, with the inscription browar parowy (steam brewery) on its body. The earliest records of this brewing facility date back to the 16th century, confirming that it was located in the same spot, where it operated until the 20th century. Originally the plant was owned by the townspeople. The 1777 taxpayers’ list mentions a treasury brewery, which proves that at that time it already belonged to the Lubomirski family, the owners of the town. Later, it became the property of the Potocki family, which led to numerous changes. The brewery building, which in its basic shape survived until the second half of the 20th century, was erected during the rule of the First Ordinate, Count Alfred Potocki. Built in the years 1834-1836 according to the design of L. Bogochwalski, it survived without any overhaul until 1907, when a new brewing cauldron and a lauter tun were brought in and installed. The newly constructed building housed the brewing and fermentation plant, and the distillery warehouse was adapted into an icehouse. The malt house remained unchanged. A part of the former brewery building also housed a distillery warehouse and a room for the propination clerk. In addition, a steam boiler was purchased and installed, and the lagering cellar was expanded. The brewery was run by the Ordination Directorate, with the so-called controller serving the role of a liaison between the brewery and the Ordinate, with the brewmaster running the daily operations of the brewery. In 1926 a steam engine was purchased and installed to drive an electric generator, which offered the opportunity to install electric lighting. A year later a copper brewing boiler with heating was purchased. In 1929, Alfred Potocki bought a truck, and in 1939 the fleet had 5 trucks. During World War II, the local brewery did not suffer any damage. During the occupation it nominally belonged to the Łańcut Ordinates. It was shut down in 2001. Joanna Kluz
