Part of the collection: Photographic iconography of Lublin from 1890–1939
The Doorkeeper's House is inevitably associated with the Saxon Garden in Lublin. This neo-Gothic building, situated in a corner of the park, next to the former Warsaw tollgate, was designed in 1888 by Marian Jarzyński. Today it stands at the junction of Racławickie Avenue, Lipowa Street and Krakowskie Przedmieście. Its body consists of two parts - the higher square and the lower rectangular. The original, higher part is only visible in Dagayev's photograph from the turn of the 20th century. It has corners reinforced with two simple scarps (buttresses). These are extended by soaring blinded turrets with a crenellated attic between them. In the middle of the façade there is a sharp-arched glazed opening. Today it is the entrance to a small café.
The Doorkeeper's House was placed on the line of a high fence which used to protect the beautiful municipal garden against vandalism of the inhabitants of the nearby Wieniawa district and against the excesses of the soldiers stationed in the Świętokrzyskie Barracks (now the KUL). The fence consisted of a high wall and cast-iron balustrades and a gate. In the first decades of the 20th century a one-storey pavilion covered with a gable roof was added to the House. It adjoined the eastern wall to the tenement house at 59 Krakowskie Przedmieście Street. In this shape the building has been preserved to this day. Only the wall of the fence connecting the house with the gate leading to the garden has been removed.
