Ashtray

The vase was found in Czelin. It was used as an urn in a grave with pyre debris revealed by a landslide in a closed gravel pit area. Apart from the vase, other alloy objects were found, including a shield boss (a shield grip), and an iron tool resembling a chisel. The cemetery, discovered in 2004, revealed so far almost 200 objects. The majority are cremation graves furnished with dress accessories and armaments. During the Roman period, i.e., from the 1st to the 3rd centuries, the Lower Oder region was a “cultural pot”, which is well represented by the cemetery in Czelin. Elements of the material culture of the people of the Lubusz group, who imported various products from Roman provinces and Scandinavia, were found on the site. More discovered objects made by those people show the influence of other cultures, including the Przeworsk culture and cultural traditions of the Elbe region. Various objects, apart from burial sites, were discovered within the cemetery: hearths, stone pavements, pits, and postholes that probably were used to support some roofed wooden structures.
