Cap

This percale headdress comes from the village of Drelów, it was worn with the festive costume from the town of Radzyń. It was made by Aleksandra Baniosz in about 1933. The main part of this women's headgear is sewn from red patterned percale. It consists of a cowl, which is lined from the inside with linen (length 24 cm, width 26 cm), and a headpiece sewn into the cowl. At the junction of these two elements, in the centre (above the forehead), the headpiece is creased, and at the back it is gathered and tied in a bow with a green ribbon. The lower part of the collar is trimmed with tulle double frill arranged in small folds. On the frill in the upper part green crepe was sewn on.

The form of headdress was worn only by married women, the first time it was put on the bride during the wedding ceremony. The maid of honour would then take off her wreath or veil and put on a headdress. It was a very ceremonial moment, in which the housewives symbolically introduced the bride to the group of married women. Caps varied in material and decoration, the cut itself was modified to a lesser extent. The better quality of the fabric and the haberdashery used testified to the wealth of the owner. It was usually sewn by skilled seamstresses or small-town headdress-making women, who also took care of their washing and arranging.
