Part of the collection: History of the city and the region
The privilege of the Łańcut clothiers’ guild was written in Polish on a parchment by the city clerk Stanisław Janetius in 1600. It was issued by the then owner of the city Stanisław Stadnicki, known as the Devil of Łańcut. The document was confirmed by the son of the Devil, Wladyslaw, but only 17 years after the statute was drafted and 7 years after his father had died. The reason why the Łańcut clothiers had to wait so long for the approval of the rights granted in the privilege can be traced back to Stadnicki's private fights, which led to him pushing all the other issues back. The text of the privilege has a small note signed by Władysław Stadnicki, which explains these circumstances. The document was sealed with the wax seal of the city, placed in a wooden box and attached to the document by a string. One interesting fact concerns the place, where the parchment was signed. Stadnicki signed it in the house of the wealthy burgher Andrzej Wenczek, which was taken over by the Devil’s family after the castle had been burnt down by Łukasz Opaliński in 1608. Joanna Kluz
