Part of the collection: Household
Waffles were a popular treat in Pomerania, made at home using heavy, cast-iron waffle irons. Preparing them was not difficult, but it required the housewife to use ingredients in specific proportions. The recipe was often inscribed on the waffle iron. The batter was made from flour, milk, eggs, butter, and yeast, and sometimes potatoes were added as well. The prepared batter was poured into the center of a well-heated and greased (with pork or goose fat) waffle iron and spread evenly. After a short time of baking, the waffle iron was turned using a poker so that the top surface became the bottom, ensuring the waffles were evenly baked on both sides. The finished waffles were spread with jam or sprinkled with sugar. The ethnographic collection of the National Museum in Szczecin includes a waffle iron that produced heart-shaped waffles with a grid pattern – known in Germany at least since the first half of the 19th century. The lid of the iron has a recipe inscribed on it, which includes potatoes. The round base that allowed the iron to be placed on a stove ring has not survived. Agnieszka Słowińska
