Portrait of a Turkish dignitary A painting from the collection of the museum (oval within a rectangle), depicting an unknown Turkish grand vizier, shown as a man of mature age, depicted in full, turned slightly to the right. The portrayed man is shown wearing a white coat bordered with brown fur, on his head is a kallavi with a diagonally arranged golden band (the prerogative of a pasha), on his legs he is wearing Moroccan leather knee-high boots. His face shows individualised features. We do not know the author of the painting, it is an 18th-century copy of a work by Antoine de Favray (b. September 1706, d. February 1781 on Malta), a French painter who specialised in portraying personalities of the Ottoman Empire. Beginning in 1762, he resided in Constantinople for ten years, where he painted scenes from everyday life of Turkey and portrayed Turkish noblemen and those visiting the empire. The painting has a wooden, gilded, profiled frame, decorated with a plant ornament, and belongs to a series of portraits contracted by duchess Lubomirska, wife of marshal Lubomirski, for the Turkish Apartment at the Castle in Łańcut, where it is currently shown.
