Part of the collection: Set of archaeological relics found in the Lublin Region
The described relic was found by accident during road construction works in 1949 in Złojec, Zamość district. It is an axe made of Volhynian flint (named after the location of the flint deposits, i.e. the area of western Ukraine), polished on almost the entire surface. In the part near the handle of the tool one can notice shinings, which are most probably caused by rubbing the frame.
The axe was made in the Bronze Age by a representative of the Mierzanowice Culture, about 4 thousand years ago. Although it was a period named after metal, people living in the Lublin region at that time still made tools, including axes, from traditional materials such as stone, flint, bone and antlers. Metal products - mostly made of copper, were mainly limited to ornaments.
You can read about the process of making flint axes in ancient times in the description of historical monument 196-A-ML-8.
The presented axe was found with three other tools - two flint axes and a stone hammer, which unfortunately went missing. Placing several tools in one place may indicate that we are dealing with a hiding place in which the owner hid valuable items.
There is also another possibility - these relics are the remains of equipment from a destroyed grave. However, as there were no archaeologists present at the time of their discovery, the explanation of why they were placed in the ground remains unknown.
