Lion
18th century
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Rzeźby
The sculpture is part of a set created by Jan Albrecht Siegwitz and Jan Adam Karinger between 1729 and 1734. It was originally located in the palace garden in Brzezinka near Oleśnica and was transferred to Łańcut in 1965 by the National Museum in Warsaw.
The sandstone statue depicts a lion lying on a rectangular slab with its head raised and turned to the right. Its hind paws and tail are tucked under its body, while its front paws extend forward, with the left one resting on a sphere. The lion’s thick, wavy mane reaches down to its paws. The lion can be seen in the Utility Courtyard (the courtyard with a majestic plane tree), where, paired with a twin sculpture, it guards the entrance to the Inner Courtyard of the palace.
