Part of the moat and the main bridge

Part of the collection: photography

Popularization note

The photograph presents a fragment of the moat and the main bridge from the western side and a fragment of the castle's western façade with the library pavilion. The moat, together with the walls and earthen embankments, comprised the Łańcut fortifications erected in the 17th century. At the end of the 18th century, the system was no longer needed; therefore, inside the moat, in direct vicinity of the castle, the first garden was set up and linden alleys were planted in place of the embankments, encircling the moat. The façade of the castle dates back to the modernisation project carried out during the time of Roman Potocki, Third Lord Ordynat of Łańcut, which he carried out together with his wife, Elżbieta née Radziwiłł, similarly to the revamping of the library pavilion erected by Princess Izabella Lubomirska (deceased in 1816). During the modernisation work carried out in the Łańcut residence by Roman Potocki and Elżbieta née Radziwiłł, a new stone bridge was erected in place of the old one, with a balustrade decorated with sculptures of putti, eagles and vases, where decorative plants were put from spring to autumn.
