Postcard - Building of Kasa Przemysłowców

Popularization note

At the intersection of Krakowskie Przedmieście and Kołłątaja streets, in the vicinity of Litewski Square, there is the former building of Kasa Przemysłowców Lubelskich, erected in the years 1899–1900. The impressive building in an eclectic style was designed by the architect from Łódź, Gustaw Landau. The construction works were financed by Adolf Frick, a member of Kasa Przemysłowców Lubelskich (The Lublin Industrialists' Fund), established in 1884. The monumental building was erected very quickly, within several months. The magnificent building was decorated with locksmith workpieces made by Józef Merkisz, who won a bronze medal for his work at the Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition in 1901.

The impressive corner of the building, with a high dome and a clock, was eagerly immortalized on postcards issued by Lublin booksellers. Among them were stepbrothers Władysław and Wiktor Kiesewetter, publishers of a colourful postcard from the beginning of the 20th century with a view of the Kasa Przeysłowców.

The members of the Fund did not use the entire extensive building. In the interwar period, Władysław Rutkowski's popular pastry shop was located on the ground floor, the interior of which was decorated with paintings by the famous local painter Władysław Barwicki. The billiard room was an additional attraction for the guests. Local press gave favourable opinions about the place, writing about its tasteful furnishings and exemplary cleanliness. After the war, the Lublinianka cafe was located here. Today the building houses a hotel.
