Małopolska Carriage with hut

Part of the collection: Pojazdy i uprzęże

Popularization note

Lesser Poland carriage with a folding hood is a court, hunting vehicle for six people ( dos-à-dos coachman seat) for a paired horse team. It was produced in the Lesser Poland region before the First World War. The vehicle comes from a collection of nearly 100 horse-drawn vehicles gathered by the museum in Łańcut and constantly enriched. It includes vehicles of different kind, from presentable to rustic, from 18th to 20th century. They come primarily from museum purchases; only a few were donated. Most of them have undergone general conservation or restoration, already when belonging to the museum’s collection. The Lesser Poland region carriage is preserved in its original state and has only undergone conservative renovation in the museum in Łańcut. It was purchased for the museum in 1992. Hunting carriage, equipped with springs, in natural wood colour with two two-seater seats, one behind the other, upholstered with canvas and with a canvas folding hood in American type. Body box equipped with a ladder at the rear wall for carrying the game. Side walls and back wall in upper part two-coloured with stripes made of two types of wood. Rear, main seat for two persons in the seating area limited by a bent, low wall rounded at the corners with carriage backrest rounded at the corners as well. At the front, a box seat with a wide mattress (for 4 people to sit dos-à-dos) and side bar handrails with the crank of a hand crank-block brake and holders for lanterns which has not been preserved. Low front mudguard, wooden at the top edge with grommets for attaching the straps of the unfolded roof. A folding rood over the main seat passing into a flat canopy over the coachman seat made of thick (sail type) canvas in natural colour with a wooden frame fixed to the coachman seat side rails and by straps to the front mudguard, mobile and detachable. Side mudguards curved, interrupted in the middle, with an iron step hanging by the footrest on an extension. Aldona Cholewianka-Kruszyńska
