School report card of Zbigniew Konstanty Siuchta

Popularization note

In 1860, the Merchant Guild of Lublin conceived the idea of establishing a school of trade. After many efforts, a four-grade Sunday School of Trade was opened on 5 August 1866. From 1902 there was also a daytime seven-grade School of Trade of the Merchant Guild of Lublin. The need to educate new students of the merchant trade made it necessary to construct a new school building. The newly-formed Aid Society for the School of Commerce began to raise funds to purchase land and build it. The financial support of the Aid Society for the School of Trade and the activity of its presidents – Mieczysław Wolski and especially August and Juliusz Vetter – contributed to the construction of a neo-Gothic building at Bernardyńska Street. Teaching began on 5 September 1906. Since then, the characteristic red brick building has been a permanent feature of Lublin's skyline. The School of Trade was also the first school in the Kingdom of Poland to introduce Polish as the language of instruction.

In 1927 the Merchant Guild of Lublin passed a resolution to call the school after its distinguished co-founders and tutors. In 1928 the Minister of Education named it the August and Juliusz Vetter Economic School. In that way, the famous Lublin industrialists, merchants, community workers and philanthropists, meritorious for the economic and cultural development of the city and the region at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, were duly honoured by the state. The name of the brothers August and Juliusz Vetter was retained after the Second World War for all the institutions that operated in the Merchant Guild building.

Under its present name, the A. and J. Vetter Economic School Complex, the school has functioned since 1974.

The Vetter Schools play an exceptional role in promoting general and professional knowledge, disseminating the achievements of science and culture, and shaping ethical, civic and patriotic attitudes among many generations of Lublin's young people.
