Maximilien de Béthune de Sully

Part of the collection: Rzeźby

Popularization note

Maximilien de Béthune de Sully (1560-1641) was a French statesman, Huguenot, friend and counsellor of Henry IV, and Marshal of France. The bronze, miniature bust shows him in his old age. He has a slender face with delicate features, a high forehead, a long moustache, and a pointed beard. He is wearing a wide-collared caftan and a fur-trimmed coat. The bust is placed on a base consisting of a brass pedestal, a cylindrical marble shaft encircled by a metal chain, and a brass stand. The author of the bust is not known. It was most likely created by a French sculptor. The sculpture was created at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It adorns the mantel in the castle's Library, together with a second miniature bronze bust depicting Henry IV on an identical stand (inventory number S.11740MŁ). Barbara Trojnar
