Museum of the history of Polish Jews
Part of the collection: Torah scrolls in the POLIN museum collection
The presented Torah scroll was found in November 2015 by workers in the attic of a historic manor (ca. 1850) in Stara Wieś (near Limanowa, Małopolskie Voivodeship). The Torah is the basis of Judaism, the basis of the Halakha (law in Hebrew), i.e. the collection of legal principles binding in Judaism. The subject of Halakha's considerations are 613 commands and prohibitions obtained by Moses, according to tradition, from God on Mount Sinai. Later regulations, called 'rabbinical regulations' were created by famous learned men such as Maimonides and Moses Isserles. The demand for this kind of creativity increased after the final formation of the canon of the Talmud and the lack of resolution of issues related to everyday life.
An interesting part of rabbinic literature are the so-called rabbinical response, a source of great value for researchers of Jewish religious life. The responsa consist of religious inquiries about various spheres of life, addressed to the most famous scholars of the Law.Donated by Maciej Mrowiec.
