Cap

Popularization note

This headdress, worn by married women to a festive costume, was sewn by a seamstress and embroidered by a professional embroiderer. It comes from the vicinity of Łuków and was made at the end of the 19th century. It consists of three parts: a headdress in the shape of a rectangle rounded at the longer edges as it was worn on the top of the head, and two sashes, which were used to tie the headdress under the chin in a decorative bow. Each piece is made of factory-made tulle and decorated with white machine- and hand-embroidery in floral motifs. The most intensive designs were placed in the most exposed places, i.e., in the centre of the headpiece in the form of a garland of single twigs with leaves which have a small flower at their ends. The same sprigs are also placed in strips along the sides. A similar decoration was placed in the lower part of the sashes, but it is more elongated and, in addition, there is a motif of small single flowers made with punched stitch. The same stitch was used to decorate the inside of the garlands. The edges of the headdress are additionally trimmed with double-crinkled factory lace, and the sashes are decoratively cut on the edges in teeth and trimmed with white thread.

This type of headgear in folk costumes in the Lublin region came from the bourgeois fashion and became popular at the end of the 19th century. Thus, they replaced full bonnets, which were sometimes additionally covered with a scarf. Half caps were worn by older women in the north-western and western part of the Lublin voivodeship until the inter-war period, that is to say, until folk costumes were abandoned in these areas.
