Peaked cap

Popularization note

Men's headgear made of cloth and fur from Wilkołazy Pierwsze, the Kraśnik region, from the end of the 19th century. It was worn on colder days with festive costumes by old and young men alike. It was called a horned cap, 'gamerka' or 'huczma'. The cloth from which the cap was made was usually the same colour as the cloth, i.e., the outer garment, and could be brown or navy blue. Caps of this type were worn in the southern part of the Lublin region in two varieties. Like the presented one, the first had a circular cross-section, with a flat square bottom, about 15-20 cm high and 22 cm in diameter, and at the bottom part had a brim trimmed with sheepskin. It was padded with bundles or shorn wool and lined with linen to maintain the rigidity of the form and keep the cap warm. It was sewn from four wedges, and each had a triangular end at the top and a rhombus-like end at the bottom. Near Wilkołazy they also wore low caps made of navy-blue cloth called 'kościuszko' caps. Its second type was lower and was also made from a rectangular piece of cloth folded in four and cut in the part which was to be the bottom in the form of an isosceles triangle. After being sewn together, the four wedges formed a square brim, while the remaining rectangular piece of fabric, after being folded in half transversely and turned up, constituted its brim. The cap also differed in decorations, i.e., the cord placed on the upper edge of the cowl, the seams of the bottom and their corners, or a pompom made of yarn in the middle. This cap went out of use in the inter-war period.
