Fan
20th century
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Outfit
The fan was made at the beginning of the 20th century. It is one of several fans preserved from the Potocki family. Its surface is made of a uniform colour, delicate pleated filling made of palm leaf and mounted on the outer ring. The fan has an inflexible, round structure, which cannot be folded.
As a symbol of affluence, refinement and coquetry, the fan reigned supreme in the salons of high society and royal courts throughout Europe. Its golden age was in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Without a doubt, it was one of the attributes of a lady. The fan is very damaged, and it was probably originally gilded.
