Popularization note

Figure of Japanese woman in kimono Small figurine representing Japanese woman in kimono; the woman is holding a pomegranate branch and garden shears in her hands. The sculpture is placed on a black wooden base. Pomegranate cultivation spread thanks to the Silk Road. This fruit became very popular in Korea and Japan, where it began to be cultivated and pruned as a bonsai. Many new varieties have been bred there. Japanese figurines depicting fishermen, circus artists, musicians or elegant court ladies were popular trinkets prized in Europe. Signed ISSHI, Japan, first half of 20th century.
