Candlestick

Part of the collection: Metale

Popularization note

Candlestick from the museum’s collection, in brass, chiselled casting, in neo-Gothic style, dating from the 19th century. A small candlestick, on a round moulded foot with a fancifully cut edge. The arched foot evolves into a cylindrical shaft ending in a round, recessed candle ring, decorated on the edge with applied pinnacle ornamentation. The whole shaft and foot decorated with Gothic, geometric and architectural ornamentation. The neo-Gothic style began to develop as early as the 18th century, first in England, then in Germanic countries, and finally became popular throughout Europe. It was dominant mainly in architecture as well as arts and crafts (in the German-speaking countries it gained great popularity in writing and printing with the so-called Gothic font). It is one of the historical styles, in Poland it was present mainly in sacral art. The candlestick is exhibited in the Turkish Apartment on the ground floor.
