Women’s shirt

The men's shirt for the Krzczonów holiday costume, purchased in Krzczonów, dates from the beginning of the 20th century; its maker is unknown. It is presented at the permanent exhibition Folk Art of the Lublin Region. It was sewn from white factory linen of crinkled border cut. It is made of eleven parts: the front and back panels (length 69 cm, width 72 cm), two attachments connecting them, situated in the upper part of the shirt, where a large, padded collar is sewn in. Two sleeves into which two wedges (called ‘wtok’) are sewn under the armpits to make it easier to move around, and two cuffs which fasten the sleeves at the bottom are also attached to the hem. The front and back lobes are firmly pinned to the hem and collar. The shirt decoration consists of embroidery on the collar, the cuffs, the lapels and along a small opening which is tied with a red ribbon called ‘feteczka’. The ornamental motifs are made on a different type of fabric, thicker and self-adhering, because it was easier to embroider on it. The ornament on all the elements was placed in the same striped pattern, the stripes are horizontal, parallel to the edge of the decorated part of the garment, except that on the lapels and collar the ornament was repeated twice. They were made with white, red, navy blue and orange thread and with various stitches, needlepoint, lockstitch or chain stitch.

The shirt costume was worn in this over the trousers and was belted with a windowed leather or velvet belt, found only in this subregion.
