Mantel clock
1845 — 1850
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Zegary
Bronze mantel clock supported on four legs, richly decorated. The lower part of the casing was adorned with a freely arranged figural-geometric decoration. In the middle of the front wall, there is a pastoral scene depicting a man handing a bouquet of flowers to a woman resting under a pergola in a garden setting. It the middle, there is a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and in the gap between the legs, the face of the pendulum is visible. At the top of the clock's case is a boy holding a flower in his hand. He is leaning against the well casing, decorated from the back by a mask in the ornament. Next to this is a vase-shaped lit torch. On the opposite side are a jug and a dog rose bush. The pastoral scene reveals a carefree, peaceful, and happy life fulfilled by love. In this way, the clock depicts the charm of rural life in an idealised way. The pastoral, drawn from pastoral songs, became an intentionally created image of longed for, happy nature. This idyllic reference to the world of folklore emphasised fairy-tale qualities and themes showing the happy life away from civilisation. One could imagine that this is a way of expressing man's deep-down longing for the garden of Eden.
