The Lubelskie-Wołyńskie Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding had its seat in Lublin at 68 Krakowskie Przedmieście Street. It held its auction on a racecourse located in the meadows by the Bystrzyca River, in the vicinity of Krochmalna and Ciepła Streets, in the area known as Za cukrownia. The Lublin Society, founded in 1925, tried to get the Governor of Lublin to allocate these grounds for the construction of a new racecourse. From 1927, races and auctions of horses were organised there. The auctions were an opportunity to buy animals, exchange experiences of breeders, find out about trends and prices.
In the past, horses were of great economic importance. They were used as draught power - for transport, work on the land and at races. No large farm could do without at least one horse. Fairs for these animals were held regularly in various towns and villages in the Lublin area. The most famous was in Łęczna. To make the fairs more attractive, horse races were organised. In the second half of the 19th century the Łęczna Horse Breeding Society was established. It was suggested that the Society and the races should be moved to Lublin. The reason was to make the city more accessible for visitors. Lublin had a railway and numerous hotels. Another reason was the subsidy granted by the Main Board of State Studs and Racing Societies for moving the racecourse from the countryside to the city. That is why it was decided to move to Lublin, where the track was specially built, and the name of the Society was changed from "Łęczyńskie" to "Lubelskie" in 1903.
