Part of the collection: The portfolio of graphics "La Mémoire Gravée" by Izaak Celnikier
The title of the engraving refers to the last stage of the artist's deportation between the Flossenbürg and Dachau camps in April 1945. It was a death march that took place partly by train and then on foot. As a result of Allied shelling of the train, Celnikier was wounded in the leg, only to drag himself almost on all fours among the dying and the dead. That very moment is shown in the engraving; the scene is rendered with a very synthetic line, against a background that is much brighter than the others. If, following the title, we try to recognise the figure and face of Celnikier himself (for example, by the hair on his head, which is thicker than on others), he appears as the third figure from the right edge of the composition.
