Goblet

Part of the collection: Artistic glass

Popularization note

A goblet made of transparent glass with a slightly greyish hue. It was manufactured at Huta Kryształowa (Crystal Factory), the first magnate-owned facility producing luxury glass and established by Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski in 1717. As from the early days of operation, the emphasis was put on top-quality goods made of crystal glass, so called because of its clarity and hardness which make it resemble rock crystal.

The bowl rests on a massive baluster-shaped stem. Its entire surface is covered with the carp-scale decoration (resembling a honeycomb). This particular type of cut can be recognised as the characteristic feature of the goods from Lubaczów, where the goblet was manufactured, later to be imitated by other factories. Such glassware, with only cut decoration or with both cut decoration and engraved decoration (e.g. a coat of arms), was already manufactured in the early days of operation, as evidenced by the description of the glass items dispatched for the funeral of the factory’s owner in 1726.
