Goblet with a cover

Part of the collection: Artistic glass

Popularization note

A goblet with a cover, made of transparent glass, decorated with the coat of arms of hetman Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski (1666–1726). The Wilanów collection comprises three nearly identical vessels (Wil.27-Wil.29).

The goblet has a wide foot, a massive baluster-shaped stem and a conical bowl (rounded along the rim). The surface shows bevelled decoration, i.e. a type of polishing that resulted in 10 different planes. This particular method of ornamentation brings out the splendour of the glass and accentuates its transparency. The key embellishment of the goblet is the engraved Leliwa coat of arms in a circular field placed within a cartouche. The space of the cartouche shows ornaments in the form of twigs with leaves and flowers. Above the cartouche is the crown with the crest (five peacock feathers with an emblem) and a pair of hetman's maces. The foot of the goblet displays engraved branches of palm tree and laurel (crossed) – this particular motif is often found on items from Lubaczów and it has its exact counterpart on the cover of the goblet.

Due to the technical development at the end of the 17th century, fashion trends related to glass changed. Formerly, the greatest popularity had been enjoyed by Venetian glassware, formed and decorated in hot temperatures, with a delicate structure. Owing to improvements at the molten glass stage, it became possible to form thicker and harder vessels of pure and clear glass. It resulted in a demand for polished and engraved glassware. Goblets, mirrors and candle-holders decorated with the use of these techniques quickly conquered European mansions and palaces. This type of luxury glassware was manufactured at Huta Kryształowa (Crystal Factory) founded by Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski (1666–1726).
