Portrait of a Soldier

Part of the collection: Painting and drawing

Popularization note

A portrait of an armed man was made in 1883 by M. E. Androlli (1836–1893). The painting composition was inscribed in an oval and framed in a passepartout with light. It is made using the technique of drawing with ink and gouache on cardboard. The painting is framed in a wooden glazed frame, profiled and gilded at the inner edge. The painting form is built – from black, through gray, to white accents- in a realistic way, with great technical proficiency. The man is depicted in his full form, in contrapposto position, in 3/4 of his right profile, in a military caftan, with a kord (straight short sword) at his belt, in high boots with uppers and a sword in his right hand. The face of a mature man, with a long, curly beard and lush, tousled hair. A face with individual portrait features. The staffage is the interior of the chamber with heavy draperies. A painting of high value in terms of composition and painting technique.
