Part of the collection: Painting and drawing
Winter landscape, with ruins and a stream This painting from the museum collection depicts a mountain landscape with a river, and staffage of fishermen and a shepherd letting his cattle drink from the river. The colours are toned down, of greens, greys and yellows, only invigorated by colourful attire of the fishermen and the shepherd. On the hill to the left, a gloriette and a building with a tower. On the right, a stream is flowing downhill, forming a waterfall that joins a river. The painting is signed „Peint par le Chevalier Francois Foschi a Rome l an 1773 r”. This is the Italian painter Francesco Foschi, called Chevalier (b. 1710 in Ancona, d. 1780 in Rome). He moved to Rome in 1729 and linked himself to the painters of the Veduta, who specialised in painting landscapes, in particular cityscapes. He had four brothers, who were also painters. The painting from Łańcut has a wooden, gilded frame, decorated with beads (in two bands), on the lower side of the frame we find the word „PHIDANZA”, hence the erroneous belief that the painting is the work of Fidanzy. The landscape is shown in the Column Hall, in the first floor of the Castle of Łańcut.
