Driving curb bit

Part of the collection: Pojazdy i uprzęże

Popularization note

DRIVING CURB BIT, London (?), 19th/20th century

A curb bit for a single horse-drawn vehicle, e.g., with a gig, called a "Gig bit" in England. It consists of long, fixed cheekpieces with two elongated eyes and large rings: on the sides of the mouthpiece and at the ends, where there are chain hooks. The mouthpiece is in the form of a thick cylinder, narrower in the middle, and rotates on its axis (on a rod attached to the cheekpieces).

It comes from the historic equestrian collection of the Potocki family from Łańcut.
