Figure of cult of dead
1901 — 1973
National Museum in Szczecin
Figures of pomdo and nomoli are found during agricultural work in Sierra Leone (by the Sherbro, Temne and Mende peoples) and in neighboring Guinea (by Kissi). In Sierra Leone they are called nomoli, and in Guinea they are called pomdo. Their appearance is read as a good sign. Kissi treat the excavated figurines as returning ancestors, while the peoples of Sierra Leone regard them as ghosts that look after the crops.
