Terracotta figurines and their fragments from the inner Niger in Mali are mostly classified in the "Jenne" (or "Nonake") style and depict stylized figures of people and animals burned in clay (eg a snake motif). The four figurines are dated (thermoluminescence method) and are over 500 years old. Others probably also date from the time when the Niger basin was within the borders of the medieval state of Mali. The genesis and purpose of the figurines are still the subject of research by scientists.
