Museum of the history of Polish Jews
Part of the collection: The portfolio of graphics "La Mémoire Gravée" by Izaak Celnikier
The title and content of the engraving refer to the beginning of the extermination of the Jews of Białystok. On the so-called Black Friday, 27 June 1941, German troops imprisoned around 800-1000 men and boys in the Great Synagogue in Bialystok on Bożnicza Street (now Suraska Street), and set the building on fire. The collective scene, showing a huddled crowd of people writhing in convulsions, is another glimpse of Celnikier beyond the threshold of hell.
