Plan des Fouilles de Pompeia

Part of the collection: Cartography
The city plan of Krakow probably dates to around 1913. The author is unknown. The plan was used several times by Józef Jezierski in his guides to the city and the surrounding area. The fact is that the map was published on his initiative. It is unlikely that the map is from a later period. In the plan, we see Krakow with its 19th-century borders, marked by Mickiewicza and Słowackiego Avenues, Kopernika Street, Rakowicka Street, Grzegórzeck Street, the Rakowice cemetery from the north and the Vistula River from the south. Podgórze was an independent town at this time, not incorporated into Krakow until 1915. Particularly noteworthy is the lack of buildings in the vicinity of the Henryk Jordan Park, where the building of the University of Mining and Metallurgy (present-day AGH University of Science and Technology) was built after 1919. The most important historical monuments and office buildings have been marked on the map. For those interested, tram lines are also marked. An interesting issue is the lack of any markings pointing to the fact that during this time, the city was a fortress. The city of Königsberg had the outline of fortifications within the city limits. In Galicia, fortifications were not marked on maps because they were military areas. Another element is that they were kept secret for strategic reasons, in the event of a future war. The collection of the Łańcut Museum includes maps which are souvenirs from the numerous travels of the Counts Potocki. This is one of those cases. The map has no hard cover or cardboard case.
